Jose Wendell P. Capili

Jose Wendell P. Capili completed degrees from UST, UP Diliman, the University of Tokyo, the University of Cambridge, and the Australian National University, culminating in a PhD focused on Literature, Screen, and Theatre Studies. Currently, he serves as Professor 12 and Associate Dean for Public Affairs within the College of Arts and Letters at UP Diliman. His scholarly output includes eight books and over 300 articles, earning him distinctions such as the Carlos Palanca Memorial Award for Essay, the Cultural Center of the Philippines Award for Poetry, and the National Book Award for Literary History and Literary Criticism. A Life Member of Clare Hall, University of Cambridge, he participates on international advisory boards for various academic journals. His leadership roles include serving as an elected Member-at-Large for the DOST-NRCP Governing Board (2024-2026) and as Chairperson of the CHED Technical Panel for Literature (2025-2028). For his contributions, he received the DOST-NRCP Achievement Award in the Humanities in 2021 and was honored with the Gawad Pambansang Alagad ni Balagtas by UMPIL in 2026 for his poetry and essays in English.

He also received writing fellowships from the 28th Silliman University National Writers Workshop (1989) and the 18th University of the Philippines National Writers Workshop (1990).

Books:

  1. A Madness of Birds (poetry, University of the Philippines Press, 1998). First book. Contains poetry in English and Filipino, including Kiamba, a Cultural Center of the Philippines-winning collection of poems on Mindanao.
  2. Bloom and Memory: Essays on Literature, Culture, and Society (essays, University of Santo Tomas Publishing House, 2002). Includes “Short Circuit,” a Carlos Palanca-winning essay on Displacement and reterritorialization in Philippine Expatriate Poetry in the US, 1972-1992.
  3. Mabuhay to Beauty! (Pop Culture, Milflores Publishing, 2003). A pioneering anthology of essays by social media bloggers on pageantry.
  4. From the Editors: Migrant Communities and Emerging Australian Community (Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre, 2007). An anthology of essays by editors of anthologies by Southeast Asians in Australia, launched during the 2007 Sydney Writers Festival.
  5. Salu-Salo: In Conversation with Filipinos (with John Cheeseman, Blacktown, and Liverpool, NSW: Blacktown Arts Centre and Casula Powerhouse, 2008). The first Australia-wide anthology of writings by Filipinos in Australia was launched at Blacktown Art Gallery during the 2008 Sydney Writers’ Festival.
  6. Lupito and the Circus Village (as translator, with John Jack Wigley, written by Rowald Almazar, with artwork by Jose Santos III; University of (Santo Tomas Publishing House, 2008). Winner of the Romeo Forbes Children’s Story Writing Competition.
  7. Migrations and Mediations: The Emergence of Southeast Asian Diaspora Writers in Australia (University of the Philippines Press, 2016), his seventh book, is based on his Ph.D. dissertation, which earned the 36th Philippine National Book Award for Literary History/Literary Criticism from the Manila Critics Circle and the National Book Development Board (2017).
  8. Bridging Leadership by Example, as lead author, co-authored with Timothy James Dimacali and Manuel de Vera, at the Asian Institute of Management in 2025. The book contains narratives on conflict resolution and how the Bridging Leadership framework has been used in areas like Mindanao to rebuild communities.
